key photograph number 1 - poster

This series of photographs was to be cropped and used as the eye on the backpack of the character on my poster.  I wanted the photo really zoomed in but still good quality and focused.

I chose this photograph as it fit really well with what I wanted, it's a focused picture, which is what i wanted. I felt it was suitable for the poster because i needed to incorporate the eye and in my sketch there was an eye on the bag and this is exactly what i wanted.

I cropped the photo slightly but later on in the poster editing process i completely crop it to just the eye. In photoshop i slightly sharpened the picture to make it a bit more clear and i also increased the contrast to bring out the colours.

I was very happy with this picture, the editing process in photoshop which brought out the colours worked well. The lighting in the picture is very good and the editing i did on it made it look even better.

The overall purpose of using this photo was to incorporate the eye, which also gives it a creepy effect which i like as it makes it different. I think the photograph really contributes to the success of the poster, it really stands out and gives a little edge on the photo.

My intentions for this series of pictures was to show another character that would be in the film but with a different personality to the other two I had previously taken pictures of. I wanted this chaarcter to be 'cool', so to achieve this i had him leaning against a wall texting as i felt this was an easy but effective way to show this. I angled the picture slightly just to be different and made sure i included depth of field.

This picture worked well as it included everything I had wanted when i first thought up the photograph.
It also has a strong depth of field which works really.

Because i felt this photo was really strong i didn't edit it that much. I slightly decreased the brightness and increased the contrast. I didn't crop this picture because i felt it needs the whole image to include his personality and the depth of field.

This photo is probably the one i'm most happy with because it really shows depth of field. It has strong lighting even without the editing process.

The purpose of the photograph is to introduce another character into the DVD cover with a different personality.

I wanted to bring out the personality of this character, which is why I used a syringe and other science props to bring this out. I also used a range of different angles and shot types.

This is the original picture and I selected this because it had an interesting angle and good lighting, it also showed the personality of the character which I was trying to get across. I felt it was suitable for the DVD box as it again showed a young character with a strong personality.

I didn't think the picture needed any editing as the lighting was strong and fit the purpose well. I did play around with some effects and adjustments but i was more happy with the original and didnt feel the need to edit it.

I am happy with this picture mainly because it didn't need any editing as it naturally fit the purpose, which was to incorporate another character with a bold personality.

the picture contributes well because it shows the character with a personality and gives a little insight into what the film could show.

My initial intention for this photo was to show the computer geek 'cracking the code' for the mutrix.
I tried lots of different angles so i had a wide range of photo's to chose from. I also tried to experiment with depth of field in the photos.

I felt this photo was the best because it was a clear photograph and had good lighting. It was also from an interesting angle, as it wasn't straight on and boring and you could clearly see what he was doing.

This photograph was suitable because it had a small preview of what could be seen in the film. The computer could also show his personality.

I wanted to slightly darken this picture, to do this i went into adjust > brightness/contrast and darkened the photo and increased the contrast. I also wanted to slightly blur the background. For this i chose 'iris blur' and adjusted it, this ended up working well.

I really like the finished picture. because it's been darkened it looks a lot creepier and more interesting. i like the fade effect that i put on it as well as it shows depth of field.

The photo fits well with the over all DVD box as it shows a young character in it which draws in the target audience.

photographer case study 3

Terry richardson - http://terrysdiary.com
Born: August 14, 1965 in NewYork.
Nationality: American.
Style: "Amater" aesthetic, Punk aesthetic photography.
Education: Hollywood High School, Nordhoff High School.

Terry’s mum landed him a job as a photography assistant with Tony Kent, who was a well-known photographer. Through this assistant job Terry learnt how to take pictures of his surroundings and also of people. Before he knew it, he was taking pictures of some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood. Some of them included Leonardo DiCaprio and Lindsay Lohan.

Terry is known for starring in his photographs with the people he photographs. Terry's photographs really intrigue me as they are really simple and basic but they are also very interesting at the same.
A lot of Terry's photo's have a sex appeal to them, an include a lot of models naked. His photo's are very "hipster" and suit a young audience and thats why it attracts a lot of teenage viewers. Also the fact that his photo's include famous people such as models and actresses may be the reason his photo's are so popular with a younger audience.
This photo is also very hipster and has a sex appeal to it. The reason this photo works well is because this is what a lot of people are viewing at the moment and these photo's prove popular.

Henri Cartier-Bresson

Henri Cartier-Bresson was born on August 22 1908 and died on August 3rd 2004.  He was a French photographer and was considered to be the 'father' of modern photojournalism. He helped develop 'Street photography' style that has inspired generations of photographers who have also followed in his footsteps.

Unlike other photographers he used a Leica 35mm range finder equipped with normal 50mm lenses for he occasionally used a wide-angle for landscape pictures. Henri used to wrap black tape around his camera's body to make it less obvious, as he used to take real life photography with real people that wasn't staged, because of this he never took photos with a flash as he saw it as 'impolite...like coming to a concert with a pistol in your hand'. Another reason for this was so that his camera didn't get stolen as Leica camera's are expensive.

He worked mostly in black and white.
He disliked developing or making his own prints.
'I've never been interested in the process of photography, never, never'

On the banks of Marne, 1938. 11x14.
I really like this picture because it's so natural. It's simply 4 people having a picnic. Something else very diverse about this picture is the woman, she is wearing something that would have been seen as something very risky in the 1930's.

Rue mouffetard, 1954, 16x20.
This picture is probably my favouritre of all Henri's work because you really can tell this is just a natural photo and the little boy wasn't staged or told to stand in a certain position.
Hyeres, 1932, 16x20
The rule of thirds is used well in this photo. Even though the cyclist is blurred because of the movement it still works well.

Blog Post 2 - Cindy sherman

Cindy Sherman was born January 19th 1954 in New Jersey which is a small suburb in New York, she is the youngest of 5 children. She was never into arts and photography before college as her father did not allow it until she started college, however she is now an american photographer and film director.

Cindy is best known for her conceptual portraits. The majority of her photographs are pictures of her, however, these photographs are definitely not self-portraits.
Cindy also does photographs labelled as 'Sex Pictures' she started this concept in 1922 but does not use herself in these pictures like she does in the others. Instead she uses prosthetic dolls.

"Untitled Film Still (#7)," 1978
Black and white photograph, 10 x 8 inches
"Untitled (#305)," 1994
Color photograph, 49 3/4 x 73 1/2 inches (framed)
Photo 1 - this photograph is interesting as it features Cindy Sherman in a kind of 'sexual' light. i like this photo because of the vintage feel about it in the way she has edited it.

Photo 2 - This photo is probably my favorite of all 3 as it doesn't look staged even if it is. The black and white gives this a more edgy effect. You can tell this photo was taken in the 80's without even researching it, which i like.

Photo 3 - This photo is the 'Sex photo's' that Cindy has been doing recently and i think it works really well. Most photographers would use real people for these kind of photo's but the fact she used prosthetic dolls makes this different to other peoples.
